Canada Malting is once again sponsoring a Malting Challenge! This year's challenge will feature their Superior Pilsener base malt, as well as their Munich malt and Saaz hops. This is an all grain brew, so if you haven't tried out all grain brewing yet, now would be the perfect opportunity.
The rules are very simple. Canada Malting will supply club members with a brew kit consisting of grain and hops. You supply the water and yeast. No adjuncts or other ingredients are allowed, although you can brew any style of beer you want (e.g., a German lager, bock, German ale, Belgian trippel, American blonde ale, etc.). So, Canada Malting supplies the base ingredients, and you determine the recipe. Canada Malting will supply ingredients for up to 40 all grain brewers. Sign-up below to get yourself on the priority list!
What do you have to pay to join the contest? Nothing -- Canada Malting is graciously supplying their ingredients at no cost to our club members!
What will be expected of you? There are two things you will agree to provide:
1) Two standard bottles of your beer for judging (submit at the September 1st meeting, or drop-off your entries prior to September 15th at Wild Rose Brewery or The Vineyard South).
2) Minimum 1 L, maximum 2 L of your beer (your choice of packaging) to share with club members at our October 2010 meeting, where we will elect a 'fan favourite' beer.
How will the beer be judged? This is a beer competition and the best tasting and highest quality beers will be judged by our BJCP judges. Note that we will NOT be judging them against the BJCP style guidelines, so use your creativity and just brew a tasty beer (don't worry about style restrictions).
When and where do I pick up my brewing kit? Kits will be available shortly and can be picked up from The Vineyard's south location. We will post an announcement on the website and send out an email to club members when they are ready. Remember, only the first 40 members to sign up will be eligible, so be sure to sign up below!
Happy brewing!
