Hello! I've just recently moved back to Calgary from across the border, where I fell in love with Fat Tire beer from the New Belgium Brewing Company. I can't seem to find it in any of the popular stores here in town. Has anybody seen it on a shelf anywhere in Alberta?

Thanks,

Maggie

Hi Maggie -- I moved to Calgary from Fort Collins, CO where I developed a love for Fat Tire and the beers of New Belgium Brewery.  Sadly, their beer cannot be found in Alberta.  At least not yet.

A great way to check is to use the Alberta Liquor Guide online search tool, which can be found here:

Do you homebrew?  I have a recipe that others swear is a dead ringer for the real Fat Tire (although I have yet to confirm this myself).  Let me know if you want it.

Cheers!

Fat Tire is not available in Alberta.

For something similar that is available in Alberta, I would recommend Tree Thirsty Beaver.  Fish Tale Organic Amber is another.

Just to revive a 15 month old thread, I just finished a Thirsty Beaver and don't think it tastes like Fat Tire very much at all. It is a tasty Amber ale, but it's not very close to Fat Tire in my opinion.

I agree with you Duncan. Fat Tire is cleaner, crisper and has a slight c-hop character. However, I would say Fat Tire and Thirsty Beaver are both tasty amber ales that are more toasty/malty than hoppy (ex North Coast Red Seal). Half Pints Bulldog Amber would be another similar beer, though not nearly as toasty as Fat Tire/Thirsty Beaver.

I did a clone of Fat tire based on the recipe in BYO and issue or two ago. Quite tasty but as mentioned below I was not able to get that nice crispyness that is in the real Fat tire so I named my flat tire :-)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm excited to try some new beer that might possibly taste like my beloved Fat Tire.

And Darren B, I hope to one day Home Brew, and at that point I'll ask you for that recipe. Thanks!

I'd love to get the recipe as well. Although I've never had the original so I don't have anything to compare it to.

Sorry to revive an old thread. If any of you could give me your fat tire clone recipes I would be eternally grateful. I am looking for one at the moment. Thanks all.

Matt.

Thirsty beaver is garbage IMO, I'd rather have other shittier beers before thirty beaver. I can taste the alcohol seperately from the beer in several of their beers. To me it's like someone took isopropanol and added it...

Now fat tire is pretty good, but I think Drop Top has a leg up on it.
