I asked waterworks if cloromine is added to the water because it show's up in the report and the answer i got was it is not added, the amount is a measurable trace amount that comes from other municipaties that add cloromine. After calgary treats the water Free clorines attatch to cloromine causing an increase in the measurement.

more importantly this is the calgary water profile I use for Beersmith based on these figures, I use an average because the values are given as ranges. and I live in the SE so this represents Glenmore water

Calgary water

CA 60

Mg 15

NA 6

S04 50

CL 8

HC03 150

Ph 7.3 - 80 (I AVG 7.7)

I might add this as a new thread as a lot of people in the Club use brewing software. If anyone uses different numbers or see's something wrong with what I have posted let me know.

I'm curious to know if anyone adds anything to their Calgary water such as 5.2 ph stabilizer?

I contacted the city on its water profile because I had a couple of questions and their answers might be of interest here.

1) Chloride (not "free chlorine residual" which is something else) is not listed in the report, and it's range is 5.5-12.6 mg/L

2) On the range of values listed, expect to be at the lowest end of the range in late summer when snow run-off and rain have subsided, and expect to be at the high end of this range in mid-winter when there is significant snow in the mountains. On the last point, I hesitate to question the expert, but you'd think the high end values wouldn't occur until early spring when run-off starts. If the water levels in the rivers are low in the winter, I can't see more minerals beeing leached into the rivers. Just my 0.02.

I use PH 5.2 stabalizer on beers that have mostly base malt as the grist. I'm not sure I need it though, and probably wont buy it again. I've done the same beers without using it and haven't had conversion issues, or change in efficiency.

When I brew light pilsners or the like, I use mostly RO water and build up the water from there. The PH from my RO system starts at a lower acidity than tap water, so If your using tap water on a light beer, PH 5.2 would get you to the proper ph in your mash, with our alkaline tap water.

Not thinking it's needed though,

I dont know if its the calgary water but I find PH stabilizer to be an enemy in home brew flavor. I can easily pick it out in homebrew and to me its a neutralizing/dumming taste. I know 5.5 makes beer wort the happiest but I dont plan on adding to my brewing any time soon.

On a side note alkaline water (7.4 ph IIRC) which is around calgary's water ph, helps reduce the effects of hangovers.
