Here's a link to Calgary's civic water quality report.

I generally use Calgary tapwater, having left it to sit out overnight to dissipate chlorine.

Water composition is an aspect of brewing I'm just getting started with, so this should be interesting. Great idea for a thread!

For the most part I use tap water that I run through a big carbon filter. If I need soft water I will dilute it 50% with distilled. I am just starting to dabble with additions, but would like to get an RO system before I jump too deep into it...

Cheers,
Corey

Thanks for the link to the water report. Is this accurate for the whole city? I thought Calgary had 3 different water profiles, North, South, and a mixture of the two for downtown.

Also I think Calgary uses Chloramine instead of Chlorine, and I don't think Chloramine will be removed from tap water by letting it sit out over night. I think you need to run it through a carbon filter.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this stuff.

A couple of links from Gerry Richardson's website (http://gerrylite.shawwebspace.ca/pages/view/brew_in_a_bag/).

- The link is for the 2008 average of all Calgary water. That's the best you can find on the city web site but I think if you call 311 you can find out which plant feeds you water (and it can change depending on demand/time of year etc.) and maybe a current analysis of that plant.

- depending on time of year and location chloramine may be used. As the link says, you cannot boil it away but campden tablets or carbon filtering works.

Cheers,

Corey

Here's another link to a city webpage that gives more information about the differing water profiles of different parts of the city.

There's nothing on this page about chloramine and a search on the city website pulls no results, although they might be "dumbing it down" for the website. Corey, do you have any more information regarding Calgary's use of chloramine in the drinking water?

Sorry about the multiple posts; the website won't let me edit my posts!

Here's a link to the 2009 water quality report.

I have no specific data regarding Calgary and Chloramine. I must have been thinking of some other report I read (possibly not about Calgary). There are lots of rumors about Calgary switching but currently (I think) they just use Chlorine.

Cheers,
Corey
