While I don't have any gear to sell, perhaps I can help you find some.

Immersion Chiller - you can build one of these using copper tubing, you should be able to find out how just by searching the internet. You can also cool your wort down by putting your brew pot in an ice bath for a while. It takes a little longer, but its a place to start.
Mill - The Vineyard will mill grain for you. If you want your own, you probably will have to order one online. I'm considering the Barley Crusher.
Brew Pot - get a turkey boiler
Mash Tun - 10 gallon rectangular cooler with braided steel hose works well. Search the internet for how this goes together.

The above suggestions get you started with minimal investment. There are probably cheaper ways, and a whole lot more expensive ways.

Hope that helps.

Awesome Chris that's a lot of great info. I've found a few great videos on youtube on how to make a mash tun and chillers.

I too am looking at gearing up for all-grain brewing. I see that I can get a Turkey Fryer package (30 quart aluminum pot + propane burner) for about $70.

My questions are: firstly, are 30 quart (28.4 liter) pots large enough for 23 liter batches (i.e. extra amount to boil-off plus room to boil); and secondly are aluminum pots ok for boiling the wort?

Thanks

Hi Doug -- if you take the plunge into all-grain brewing, you are likely to never look back!

Regarding your two questions:

1. A 30 quart pot is the bare minimum size for all-grain brewing. The boil for a standard 5 gallon all grain batch starts at about 6.5 - 7 gallons of wort, which just barely fits in that size of pot without leaving a lot of room for the boiling wort. You need to either (i) watch your boils like a hawk to avoid boil-overs (keep a spray bottle of cold water handy just in case!), or (ii) invest in Fermcap-s foam control drops to prevent boil-overs. I have used the latter method and it works just fine. Note that if you shop around a bit, it is possible to find 40 quart turkey fryer kits which make the process a bit easier (I think I have seen them at Wal-Mart for about $100).

2. Yes, aluminum pots work great for boil kettles. In fact, I personally feel they are superior to stainless steel pots, but that is just my opinion. I wrote an article on the subject in the February 2008 club newsletter. Click here to access it.

I hope that helps!

Thanks.

WalMart just had one of their "RollBacks" yesterday and the price on the Burner c/w 42 quart Aluminum Lobster Pot is now down to $79.

It's a 58,000 btu burner so I'm looking forward to testing the power!

That's a great price. And a perfect setup for homebrewing. Thanks for letting everyone know about the price drop!

I've got a 5 gallon Igloo cooler if you need a HLT. Not much more than 2°C drop in temp. in 2 hours. I'm looking to upgrade to a 10 gallon anyways. Yours for $25 with ball valve attached. Let me know if you need one.

I'm also considering upgrading the size of my all grain gear to 80 quart from 40 quart. I have two S/S Polarware brewpots, complete with thermowells, ball valves, and one S/S false bottom. They are in great condition and will last forever! They retail for over $400 each. If someone's interested, make me an offer...

Cheers and beers,

kolin
