I have a question about altering a Stout Kit. I would like to make an Oatmeal Stout but i don't have the experience (or equipment) to brew all-grain, extracts etc. I would like to get comfortable doing kits/altering kits before I make the next step into all-grain/extracts.

Can I add oatmeal to this Stout Kit? http://www.thebrewhouse.com/types/ind....

If so, do I add it in the primary? How much do I add? Do I have to prep the oatmeal in any way? I've tried googling it but all I find is all-grain recipes etc.

Thanks in advance

/D

I think you need to put the outmeal in hot water to get what you want out of it. Just dropping it into the primary may not do much. Try soaking your oatmeal in 150d F water for 1 hour, then drain off the water and use that water as some of the water for your kit. Essentially doing a mini mash. I'm not 100% sure on this, it is just a thought.

Or you could just jump right into all grain. :) I did three kits before going all grain. Just do you research, ask questions and you will be fine.

Toast the oats before steeping them. In the oven at 325F for 75 minutes, giving them a shake / mix every 10-15 minutes. If it looks like they are starting to turn dark brown or black, you've gone to far. You can get oats at your LHBS or get "quick oats" from the grocery store.

It's not a mini-mash, there are no enzymes to break down the starches from the oatmeal. You will be adding starches to your wort.
